Description

Originating from the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter and left over the formation of the Solar System some 4.6 billion years ago, Mundrabilla was the first of the meteorites to be found on the Nullabor Plain, during the construction of the Trans-Australian Railway in 1911. The three Premier Downs masses were found in 1911 and 1918. The two largest masses, 10-12 tonnes and 4-6 tonne, were found in 1966. The larger mass in Perth (Western Australian Museum); the smaller mass went to Adelaide, then to Heidelberg for cutting and distribution. Two further masses, totalling about 1640 kg, were found in 1979 and many smaller individuals, were found in 1979 and smaller individuals have been found since.
