Description: A strand of beautiful Islamic blue glass trade beads (25 eye beads), excavated in Djenne, Mali.
Interspersed with modern sterling silver beads and clasp.
Eye beads of this type were believed to be apotropaic (they protected the owner against evil spirits and misfortune). They were of Egyptian manufacture and were traded across North Africa on the Trans-Saharan route.
