Description: A large Meroitic hand-made red ware clay storage jar, with wide, flared neck, the spherical body with mat-impressed decoration.
Ex Whitbourn collection, Melbourne.
Origin: Late Meroitic to post Meroitic period, 1st-6th century A.D. Sudan
Dimensions: Height: 34.0 cm / Maximum diameter: 31.0 cm / Diameter at lip: 11.5 cm
Condition: Intact, with no repair or restoration; abundant signs of magnesium growth.

Description: A sandstone sculpture with four heads of the god Serapis, surmounted by a modius (corn basket), a symbol of the underworld.
Serapis was a composite deity who incorporated characteristics of the Egyptian gods Osiris and Apis, and was worshipped as a god of the afterlife. Mention of Serapis is first noted in the Hellenisitic period, but the popularity of his cult later spread throughout the Roman empire.
