| Title: |
Ivory magic wand, Middle Kingdom period |
| Item Code: |
a7936 |
| Description: |
Three large fragments from an extremely rare apotropaic wand, fashioned from hippopotamus ivory and carved overall with protective figures and symbols. This type of wand was used to ward off evil spirits and was ritually broken before placement in the tomb. The implement was imbued with the strength of the hippopotamus from which the material originated. Its shape was also significant, being in the form of a boomerang-like throwing stick used to hunt flocks of birds which symbolised chaos, thereby investing the wand with the power to control or subdue destabilising forces. Examples of this type of wand are held in the British Museum and the Petrie Museum, University College, London (UC16381 / 16384). The fragments are housed within a custom-made glazed wooden display frame. Ex Mossgreen Auctions, Fine Australian & International Art & Antiques, featuring the Collection of the Late Harley Baxter, Melbourne, 22-23 November 2009. |
