A finely carved limestone triad of Buddha and Bodhisattvas |
| Item Code: |
x2502 |
| Description: |
A finely carved limestone triad of Buddha flanked by bodhisattvas and dragons. Above are winged musicians. The lotus base, carved separately, bears a dedicatory text. Natural earth pigments and gold gilding remaining. Top of triad rejoined; ancient loss evident. Ex Macau collection. Collected mid 1970's to early 1980's. For a much smaller, fragmentary stele in similar style, cf Christie's, New York, Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 29 March 2006, lot 340. The dedicatory inscription is dated Second year of Tianbao (under the reign of Emperor Wenxuan of Northern Qi period, AD 550- AD 559), on 11th of October. The donor of the stele is named Wong Chung Man, and the text expresses the hope that the stele will bring to his parents good health, longer life, prosperity and harmony. |
