| Description: |
On Consignment A lovely ancient pottery Lekanis with lid in superb condition. Attributed to a late descendant of the White Saccos painter, from the workshop of the Baltimore painter. Painted in the red-figure technique. The lid is decorated on one side with a naked man with effeminate features, probably denoting that he is the god Dionysus. He is seated on a covered stool, he wears bracelets, hair ornaments , a ring and slippers. The figure holds a ribboned ball in one hand and a phiale in the other. In the field around him are floral motifs and a scented ball. On the other side a clothed woman is seated, wearing slippers, bracelets, a ring and hair ornaments. She holds a ribboned ball, a phiale and also a thyrsus, around which vine leaves are wrapped. In front of her lays an over-turned amphora. These implements may all denote her worship of Dionysus. The lid has a floral sunburst design in black. There is a reserved band around the base and two large palmettes divide the two scenes which adorn the lid.
Examined and attributed by the late Professor A.D. Trendall and recorded in RVA Supplement II. Ex-Sotheby's Auctions, Ex-Downies Gallery of Antiquities and Ancient Coins, Victoria (Certificate available) |
