| Description: |
A large Akkadian aragonite (fossilized shell) cylinder seal depicting the god Ea. The seal is engraved with the image of the water god Ea (Enki), portrayed characteristically with streams of water flowing from his shoulders; small fish swim along the flow. He is shown being approached by worshippers. Ea (Enki) was one of the creator gods and was always seen as favourable mankind; he was believed to inhabit a freshwater ocean (Abzu) beneath the earth. The head of the god has not been engraved - it was probably deliberately omitted, though there is a possibility that the glyptic is incomplete. The surface is worn, though the impression is reasonably distinct. |
