Title: An early limestone statue of a seated male figure, probably a scribe
Item Code: a4310
Description: An early limestone statue of a seated male figure, probably a scribe.
The figure is portrayed in the pose typical of scribe figures from later periods, though in this case it is the left hand which appears poised to write. The figure is cross-legged, wears a short kilt and is seated against a back pillar. He wears a shoulder length wig with details delineated by circular indentations. The wig and facial features of the subject suggest a non-Egyptian origin, probably Nubian. The disproportionately large head might also indicate that he is a dwarf, a revered figure in ancient Egypt.
Stylistically, the somewhat crude workmanship and distinctive features of the figure have affinities with certain other figures of the archaic period.
Damage evident in sections; remnant black pigment in recessed areas of eyes and brow.
