A rare and spectacular Murik Lakes spirit fish sculpture used in the aimaru ceremony; cane frame covered by canvas and wood decoration, both painted with traditional and traded paints; feather, grass fibre and foliage attachments; central wooden pole to support the sculpture during the dance ceremony. The fish is a type of mackerel known as kamein. The aimaru ceremony is performed every one to two years. It is a celebration of abundance and good fortune. Males are allowed to carry the fish and dance with it. The name of the particular fish spirit is often painted boldly on the side of the sculpture. Accompanied by a custom steel display stand. |
