A Bactrian stone figure in the form of a highly stylised face with anthropomorphic features, carved in ovoid form from black schist, the convex upper section with deeply incised grooves representing the contour of the head and mouth, deep, circular eyes, and a raised ridge representing the nose; ancient loss around the opposite end of the upper section, the exposed breaks showing signs of very great age; the underside without carved design; the surface with excellent wear and accretions in sections.

Description

A Bactrian stone figure in the form of a highly stylised face with anthropomorphic features, carved in ovoid form from black schist, the convex upper section with deeply incised grooves representing the contour of the head and mouth, deep, circular eyes, and a raised ridge representing the nose; ancient loss around the opposite end of the upper section, the exposed breaks showing signs of very great age; the underside without carved design; the surface with excellent wear and accretions in sections. This striking carving almost certainly functioned as a magical talisman or amulet.
